RESTAURANT REVIEW: Breakfast at Cafe Lyon at EDSA Shangri-La Plaza Mandaluyong

It’s been a while since we’ve had a breakfast date (mostly because I don’t usually eat breakfast). So when the opportunity presented itself in the form of idle time in between errands, we took the chance to grab it.

We were in EDSA Shang-ri La Mall for an errand but finished 40 minutes before the mall opened for another errand. So we decided to quickly Google breakfast places that were open at about 9:20AM when the mall was still closed. We came across Cafe Lyon just sitting at the edge of the Shangri-La Plaza Mall, near Shaw Blvd. (where Pizza Hut was previously located) that opens at 7AM!

Combination Breakfast at Cafe Lyon

I’m a crispy bacon lover. so Cafe Lyon’s Combination Breakfast composed of breakfast sausages, crispy bacon, eggs, and a choice of garlic rice or toasted bread, spoke to me almost immediately from the menu.

What I love most is how the crispy bacon is cooked to perfection with just the right amount of crisp. The garlic rice was also legitimate in the sense that it’s rice cooked in garlic and oil instead of simply sprinkled with fried garlic like some stores do.

Not much to highlight in this dish, but it’s classics just done well. My only slight is I hope they had freshly cracked pepper (they only had pre-ground pepper).

Combination Breakfast – P450

Dane and I’s Rating: 3/5

Dane loves sausages so it wasn’t surprising that he ordered the Lyon Breakfast. It’s italian Sausages, eggs, and choice of garlic rice or toasted bread.

There’s honestly not much to say apart from another classic just done well. Nothing that comes at you as a “must try.”

Lyon Breakfast at Cafe Lyon

For an additional P80 with Cafe Lyon’s All-Day Breakfast Menu, you have a couple of drink options.

Cafe Lyon’s Cappucino balances coffee and chocolate. The beans used had barely any acidity (that I really hate), so it was a nice cup of coffee and a definite steal at the P80 add-on price with our breakfast orders. Just wish it was served hotter though!

Cafe Lyon’s Hot Chocolate is also an 80-peso add-on to their All-Day Breakfast menu.

The Hot Chocolate drink in Cafe Lyon is decent. The flavor profile is good, but not very rich if that’s what you’re looking for.

As a side note, personally, I prefer hot drinks to actually be hot. This was warm. Dane didn’t mind, though.

Kid's Grilled Cheese Sandwich at Cafe Lyon

After ordering, we were curious when we saw the Grilled Cheese Sandwich in the Kid’s Menu so we decided to try it out.

There wasn’t anything remarkable about Cafe Lyon’s Grilled Cheese Sandwich. But keeping in mind it’s targeted towards kids, it makes sense that it tastes a bit more straightforward—toasted bread with an uncomplicated choice of cheese.

If this was marketed as a regular grilled cheese sandwich, I’d probably fail the rating, especially at this price point. Dane loved it though, so I guess he’s a kid lol.

Overall Rating:

  • Taste: 2.5/5
  • Bang for Buck: 2.5/5
  • Ambiance: 3/5
  • Service: 2/5
  • Would we eat here again? Yes, mostly because we’re curious to try the non-breakfast menu!
